Active Transportation
Active Transportation Plan
PennDOT developed its Active Transportation Plan in 2019. This plan outlines a vision and framework for improving conditions for walking and bicycling across Pennsylvania communities. The department is coordinating with planning regions and stakeholders across the Commonwealth to implement the plan.
Ride a Bike
Biking is a healthy, accessible, and affordable mode of transportation. It offers a reduced environmental footprint with no fuel expenses or parking fees, low maintenance costs, and provides a cardiovascular workout.
Pennsylvania has over 2,400 miles of bicycle routes and an increasing focus on improving bicycling safety and access. Check out the state's designated BicyclePA routes and the trails options in Pennsylvania.
Riding your bike to the train or bus terminal and taking public transit is another option.
When you're biking, safety always comes first. Learn more about biking safety and laws.
Take a Walk
Walking is a healthy mode of transportation offering a reduced environmental footprint without vehicle expenses or parking fees. Below are links to PennDOT resources for pedestrian safety.
Share the Road License Plates
The "Share the Road" plates were authorized in 2016 by Act 36, referred to as the David (Dave) Bachman Act, which was enacted in memory of a PennDOT employee who served as the department's first bicycle/pedestrian coordinator. All proceeds from the sale of the plate fund PennDOT's bicycle and pedestrian safety efforts, as well as highway infrastructure signage for bicyclists with the purpose of wayfinding and/or safety.
Applicants may order a plate by completing Form MV-917 - Application for Share the Road Registration Plate (PDF). The cost of the plate is $40. This plate may also be personalized for a fee of $112 in addition to the $40 plate cost.
PennDOT Connects
PennDOT continues to make transportation planning a collaborative process that supports statewide and community vision and goals through the
PennDOT Connects initiative. Connects reaches communities during the transportation planning processes, to partner in the decision-making for infrastructure improvements.
