One of Pennsylvania's hometown teams is in the Big Game this year, so of course there will be celebrating around the state. But let's make sure we don't add tragedy to the celebration — don't drive drunk, drugged, or distracted.
The last time the Philadelphia Eagles played in the Super Bowl — also against the New England Patriots in 2005 — there were 245 crashes over the weekend, resulting in five deaths. Of those crashes, 50 were related to alcohol. And on average, there are 34 alcohol-related crashes statewide over Super Bowl weekend.
So, while we know you're excited for the possibility of our hometown team taking home the Lombardi Trophy, please keep in mind the safety of yourself and others on the roads this coming weekend.
Before you head out to parties or the local bar, designate a sober driver. Or use public transportation, call a taxi, or use a rideshare program like Uber.
In addition, NHTSA's SaferRide app, available in the app store, is another resource to help fans who have been drinking find a sober ride home — by identifying their location and helping to call a taxi or a friend to pick them up.
Even if you weren't drinking and plan on getting in the car, be aware of the dangers of distracted driving. It's tempting to text your friends about that awesome play, but wait to do it until you're safely at home.
