Byways Program
The Mission
The mission of the Pennsylvania Byways Program is to support communities and local governments in achieving byway designations. To assist with local efforts to maintain byway resource qualities, to protect and preserve visual features and community character, to educate residents and visitors, to promote tourism and enhance economic development potential throughout the Commonwealth, and to avoid, minimize, and mitigate negative impacts along byway corridors.
The Pennsylvania (PA) Byways program includes 21 designated PA Byways, one Forestry Byway, and four Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Scenic Byways (NSB). The Pennsylvania program parallels FHWA's NSB Program. We designate Pennsylvania Byways at the request of local communities seeking to highlight roadways with cultural, historical, recreational, archaeological, scenic, and natural qualities.
If your commuity is interested in pursuing Pennsylvania Byways designation, please submit an Interest Form.
