Program Information by Career Clusters

A Program's curriculum should correlate with a task list that consists of the following information:

  • A Program of Study will have a State Developed Task List Program of Study Task List
  • Career and Technical Program task lists will either align with OAC recommendations along with the Post-Secondary school that it has a 1:1 agreement, or program will have a 1:1 agreement and a State Developed Task list. (See specific CIP information provided below)

All Tasks lists should contain information from the following organizations:

  1. Occupational Advisory Committee recommendations
  2. Industry standards established by state or national trade or professional organizations or state or federal regulatory bodies recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. SOAR Programs of Study Career and Industry Based Websites (PDF)
  3. Integrate CTSO topics to include instruction in the development of human relations skills, knowledge of occupations, leadership competencies and positive attitudes toward fulfilling occupational, civic, social, and community responsibilities.
  4. Pennsylvania Standards Aligned System SAS Portal
  5. Academic Standards for Career Education and Work (PDF)

*Career and Technical Programs must have a 1:1 locally developed Post-secondary Agreement.

Advisory Committee Guidelines

Designed for the Occupational Advisory Committees. It is intended for use by new and existing committees, providing suggestions on how an occupational advisory committee can be organized and maintained to function effectively. The main purpose of an occupational advisory committee is to strengthen the career and technical education program by making recommendations for program improvement and providing technical assistance to assure the most up-to-date curriculum content and resources.

CTE Safety

Promoting a safe CTE school, laboratory, and classroom (PDF)
This publication is a practical handbook designed for all CTE professionals within Pennsylvania. While CTE programs are diverse and follow unique educational formats per discipline, the competencies associated with providing safe and healthy CTE laboratories and classrooms are the same for most subject areas. Therefore, this publication is designed to provide all career and technical educators with a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities associated with establishing and maintaining a safe CTE learning environment.

Commission for Agricultural Education Excellence

Agriculture is a $135 billion industry facing an aging workforce. In recognition of future workforce needs, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and PDE produced a comprehensive agricultural education report for schools and created the Commission for Agricultural Education Excellence.

Education Program Task Grid

The task grid for classification of instructional program, 13.0101 Education, General is found on this page.  The task grid is used as a framework for establishing a high school program that introduces students to the education professional.  If public schools are using the task grid to develop a career and technical education program, the task grid serves as a framework for schools to develop a coordinated progression of non-duplicative coursework that includes the opportunity for secondary students to earn industry-recognized credentials and postsecondary credits through local articulation agreements with postsecondary institutions.  Locally, schools can add to the task grid in order to meet local needs of the community.

Integrating English Language Arts (ELA) into career and technical education (CTE) programs enhances the ELA concepts that are embedded in CTE content.  It is a process that provides the opportunity for ELA and CTE teachers to work together to identify where ELA intersects with CTE concepts and applications. Students benefit from this team process by having ELA concepts taught in the same context in the ELA classroom and also the CTE program. Research shows that this model has a significant positive impact on student learning in English with no loss to career and technical area content.

These “mini-lessons” have been designed to teach the eligible content items. The mini-lesson plans demonstrate what the eligible content means and how a ELA teacher might explain the concept to students. These mini-lesson plans are generic across any career and technical program.

T-Charts: T-charts are being developed to “bridge the gap” between CTE and ELA, and can be used by both English and CTE teachers. This resource will consist of three components: a T-chart, a script, practice problems, and vocabulary associated with the concept. Each T-chart will demonstrate how a CTE teacher delivers the concept covered by the PA Core Reading or Writing Standard, and how an English teacher instructs the same concept. The script that accompanies the T-chart will assist the teacher in bridging the gap by comparing similarities and differences between the two approaches and identifying common mistakes made by students. The practice problems are set up so that three problems are in context, three are generic applications, and three are in plain Reading or Writing language.

Integrating math into career and technical education (CTE) programs enhances the mathematical concepts that are embedded in career and technical education content. It is a process that provides the opportunity for math and CTE teachers to work together to identify where math intersects with CTE concepts and applications. Students benefit from this team process by having math concepts taught in the same context in the math classroom and also the CTE program. Research shows that this model has been shown to have a significant positive impact on student learning in mathematics with no loss to career and technical area content.

Mini-Lessons (PDF): These “mini-lessons” have been designed to teach each of the 57 eligible content items related to the 11th grade PSSA. The mini-lessons demonstrate what the eligible content means and how a math teacher would explain the concept to students. These mini-lessons are generic across any career and technical program. Our thanks to Berks County Career and Technology Center for sharing these mini-lessons.

T-Charts: T-charts are being developed to “bridge the gap” between CTE and math and can be used by both math and CTE teachers. This resource will consist of three components: a T-chart, a script, and practice problems. Each T-chart will demonstrate how a CTE teacher teaches the concept covered by the PA Math Core Standard and how a math teacher teaches the same concept. For instance, a carpentry instructor teaches how to determine the pitch of a roof. A math teacher teaches how to calculate slope. The T-chart will compare the two and identify the vocabulary associated with the concept. The script that accompanies the T-chart will assist the teacher in bridging the gap between the two by comparing similarities and differences between the two approaches and identifying common mistakes made by students. The practice problems will be set up so that three problems are in context, three are generic applications, and three are in plain math language. Additional program areas are being developed.

T-Chart Writing Tips and Rules (PDF) This document gives instructions to teachers on how to complete a Math T-Chart, using the seeded T-Chart to create a program specific Math T-Chart. The seeded Math T-Charts already contain the math procedure for teaching the PA Core Standard on the right side. The CTE instructor, will develop the left side of the Math T-Chart which is program specific to career and technical education.
