Employment Opportunities at PDE

The Bureau of Human Resources administers programs to attract and retain a highly qualified workforce to lead and serve PA's educational community. Employees in the PA Department of Education (PDE) provide direction and support for the early childhood and K through 12 programs in Pennsylvania's public schools, career and technical, and private school systems; coordinate the planning, program approval and leadership services to all segments of postsecondary and higher education; develop and coordinate library services and systems across the Commonwealth; distribute federal and state grants and state subsidies; determine certification of teachers; and administer the school laws of Pennsylvania. The Department employs approximately 600 persons, with most of the positions being located in Harrisburg (Dauphin County).

Most positions in the PDE are covered by the Pennsylvania Civil Service Act. The State Civil Service Commission (SCSC) is responsible for conducting examination programs for these positions. Interested persons must participate in the SCSC examination process in order to qualify for employment. Most job titles require Pennsylvania residency, although the residency requirement has been waived for Special Education Advisors.

PDE provides a full range of benefits for regular salaried (full-time) employees and on a prorated basis for qualified part-time employees. Benefits include single or family health care, life insurance, deferred compensation plans, a leave program, retirement plans, and more.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education does not discriminate in its educational programs, activities or employment practices based on race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, ancestry, union membership, or any other legally protected category. This policy is in accordance with state law, including the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, and with federal law, including Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
