    ​​​Driver Improvement School

    PennDOT offers a Driver Improvement School for drivers with six or more points or those caught speeding excessively (31 mph over the limit). The course covers driver responsibility, risk awareness, and safe interactions on the road. It's aimed at improving driving decisions to prevent future violations and crashes.

    Overview

    The course lasts six hours, split into two sessions on the same day. Attendance is mandatory, along with passing a multiple-choice exam with at least 80%. Missing the course or failing to meet requirements leads to an indefinite license suspension.

    First-time offenders with six points can choose between a written exam or the school. Passing the exam removes two points. Completing the school cuts four points.

    For repeat offenders or those caught speeding excessively, a hearing notice is sent. Recommendations may include a road test or a license suspension up to 15 days for second-time offenders. Third-time offenders may face a 30-day suspension.

    After completing the Department's sanctions, two points are removed. Failing to attend hearings or the school results in suspension until requirements are met.

    Speeding offenders also face similar recommendations after a hearing. No points are removed after completing the hearing and the school.

    Classes are held online or in-person at various centers across Pennsylvania. Only those mandated by point accumulation or excessive speed can attend.

      Drivers may only attend the Driver Improvement School as required because of their point accumulation or excessive speed conviction; they may not request to attend on their own.​​
