How to Navigate the Dashboard
Each Dashboard page has an Overview page, plus several narrower views that provide a more detailed look at the data. These selections can be made on the left side menu on each page of the Dashboard.
Filters
Filters for narrowing the data shown on your screen are available at the top of the screen.
Note that filter selections will remain in place across all pages of all dashboards, even if you use the home button to navigate to the splash page and select a different dashboard. Use the Clear Filters button on any page to return to a statewide view that is inclusive of the entire 3-year date range.
Traffic and Commercial Vehicle tile filtering
On both the Traffic and Commercial Vehicle Dashboards, Crash and Crash Map views also have tiles with checkboxes to provide an additional layer of filtering. Selecting more than one tile will display crashes that fall into all categories selected. Because of this, selecting too many tiles will result in no data being displayed. This will also happen in instances where two tiles selected are mutually exclusive; for example, Reportable Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Crashes and Non-Reportable CMV Crashes. This additional layer of filtering does not carry over from one view to the next.
Crime sub-categories
On the Crime Dashboard, each selection from the left side menu will display buttons with sub-categories of offenses. When one is selected, additional details will be shown on the right, and the graph and map data will change to reflect the selection.
Firearms section filtering
On the Firearms Related Dashboard, buttons labeled Assault, Robbery, Sex and Drug Offenses; Homicide; and Suicide are used to display bar graphs below and filter the map and age range graphics. Additional levels of filtering are available by clicking on the bar graph, the age range graphics, and the map. Multiple selections can be made by using Ctrl+click on each of the individual elements you wish to filter for. For example, a user can filter for intentional homicides by age range and county or municipality by first selecting the homicide button, then selecting the Intentional Homicide bar on the graph below, and finally selecting from the age range and map graphics. Selecting any combination of filters that will lead to a total of zero will clear all filters. Ctrl+clicking a selection again will deselect it. These additional filters will also change what data is displayed in the radial gauge graphic at the top of the page. Click the Clear Filters button to clear all selections.
The radial gauge graphic displays the percentage of total investigations involving a firearm out of total criminal investigations. When filters are selected, it displays the percent of the total investigations based on those filters.
Hovering and info buttons
Hover over text providing additional definitions and insights is shown whenever the cursor is placed over a button or tile. Hover over text is not available for all elements.
Clicking yellow info buttons will provide additional insights on the filters available. Place your cursor directly over the insight button to use these pop-ups.
Additionally, when hovering over a graph or visual, a small white filter pop-up will appear. Note that due to screen size limitations, this will not be automatic on all devices, and clicking in the blank space of a visual will make it appear. Clicking the filter image on this pop-up will show all filters that are currently applied. Clicking Focus Mode will display the visual full screen. Click Back to Report in the upper left corner to navigate back.
Maps
Maps will display a maximum of 3,500 records. Use filters at the top to narrow searches.
Views
Use radio buttons to select different map views, for example, county and municipality, and for traffic and commercial, street and heat maps. Note that filter selections will remain in place as different map views are chosen; use the clear filters button to clear filters.
Zoom
On street and heat maps, use the + - buttons to zoom in. Drag and drop the map to center the location you wish to view.
Hovering for more information
On street maps, hovering over an individual point will provide a pop-up with further insights. On heat maps, this is a visual only.
Selections
When in County or Municipality view for a map, use Ctrl+click to select multiple counties or municipalities. Ctrl+clicking a county or municipality again will deselect that county or municipality; clicking will change the selection to just that county or municipality. Click the Clear Filters button to clear all selections. A Reset Map button is provided for all county and municipal maps to clear selections for those maps.
