Field Reports - April 26, 2024

  • Berks County Game Warden Bill Vroman reports detecting several violations where new adult hunters never took the mandatory Hunter-Trapper Education class. “If you are looking for a Hunter Trapper Education class for you or a child or grandchild, check the PGC website,” Vroman said. “Classes are starting up now in the spring and will run throughout the summer. Sign up early as some classes fill up quickly.”
  • Berks County Game Warden Benjamin Sawina reports several active cases of unlawful wildlife possession and he’d like to remind the public it is unlawful to remove animals from the wild and take them into possession.
  • Bucks County Game Warden Hannah Jimenez reports confiscating several untagged traps this past season.
  • Chester County Game Warden Nelson Yocum reports that, while patrolling the State Game Lands 43 rifle range, two separate groups set up, and not one person had a range permit or hunting license. He guided them to where they could buy either online and legally use the range. “It is important to read and understand all the rules before using the range,” he said. “Not knowing the rules is not an excuse for breaking them.”
  • Chester and Lancaster counties Game Warden Sgt. Matthew Johnson reports issuing several citations to two Berks County men he encountered at a boat ramp on the Schuylkill River the day after Christmas. Violations were related to trapping and harvesting furbearers without obtaining the required furtaker license, hunting waterfowl without possessing a Duck Stamp, and operating a boat less than 16 feet long without wearing Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) between Nov. 1 and April 30.
  • Dauphin County Game Warden Zachary Soles reports two contacts were made with individuals living in their vehicles on State Game Lands 211 in the area of Clarks Valley Road. Both individuals were advised it was unlawful to camp on game lands.
  • Delaware County Game Warden Blake McNew reminds people not to disturb nests or newly born wildlife. “If an animal looks like it is in need, call a rehabilitator or the Pennsylvania Game Commission,” McNew advised.
  • Lancaster County Game Warden John Veylupek investigated an individual for shooting a Canada goose out of season with a rifle. Multiple citations have been filed.
  • Lebanon County Game Warden Zach Salsgiver reports that, while conducting night patrol on State Game Lands 46, he encountered an intoxicated individual who was in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
  • Lehigh County Game Warden Trevor Faust reports with the warm weather and longer days, more calls about newborn wildlife will be coming in. “It is important to remember that wildlife, especially fawns, are more capable than we give them credit for. Often, the mother is nearby, even if we can’t see her,” Faust said. “If you come across a fawn in your yard or in the wild, let it be and don’t touch it. If it has been a long time and you’re concerned, you can always call the Pennsylvania Game Commission for help.”
  • Montgomery County Game Warden Kyle Lubak reports, taking a youth hunter out for turkey hunting is a great way to get a kid into hunting.
  • Northampton County Game Warden David Furmato reports there has been an increase in illegal ATV and off-road activities on State Game Lands 168 in Bushkill Township. Anyone witnessing this unlawful activity is urged to call 1-833-PGC-HUNT and report it.
  • Schuylkill County Game Warden Charles T. Schuster reports citing an individual for driving a motorized vehicle on state game lands, and abandoning a vehicle on state game lands.
  • Schuylkill and Berks counties Group Supervisor Sgt. Jason Macunas reports two Pine Grove residents recently pleaded guilty to violations during the general firearms deer season. While on routine patrol in Washington Township, Macunas observed a vehicle driving at an extremely slow speed. When stopped, the driver had a pair of binoculars on his lap, and the passenger was in possession of a loaded firearm. In addition to facing charges related to the loaded firearm in the vehicle, they pleaded guilty to hunting through the use of a motor vehicle, commonly referred to as “road hunting.”
