In June 1994, the Department of State, Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs (BPOA), Professional Health Monitoring Programs (PHMP) established the Disciplinary Monitoring Unit (DMU) to respond to the needs of licensees who have had formal disciplinary action by the Bureau’s licensing boards.
The PHMP administers the DMU in order to ensure that licensees maintain compliance with the probationary terms and conditions imposed by the licensing board.
The DMU refers licensees suffering from a mental or physical disorder, such as a substance use disorder, for appropriate treatment and provides structured monitoring to ensure that participants remain capable of safely practicing their licensed profession.
All of the BPOA licensing boards may refer licensees to the DMU by issuing an order requiring enrollment subject to terms and conditions.
